David was born in Darwin and spent his childhood years at Humpty Doo Station southeast of Darwin, NT. When he was 21 years old, he and his family moved to Daly River. When he was a young man David spent time with his grandfather who taught him the traditional way to do bark painting and how to straighten the bark and find the traditional paint colours and brushes. David’s grandfather used to tell the young people dream time stories about what happened a long time ago when all the animals were human and as an adult David likes to paint the animals from these dream time stories.

David has his wife’s cousin, Manuel Pamkal, to thank for showing him how to paint. Manuel is one of the senior artists at Manyallaluk. By watching Manuel painting, David learned Manuel’s style of painting and is still using some of those techniques in his paintings today. David used to live at Manyallaluk community but is now residing at the neighbouring community of Barunga, where he works in the Community Education Centre and his wife works in the Health Clinic.

David’s mother, Margaret, is also an artist and works doing fabric art. She comes from Daly River Aboriginal community, but now lives in Darwin where she produces hand-printed fabric designs.
